Our
Story

Human Development Company Inc. (HDC) was the first Employee Assistance Program (EAP) in Kentucky, and the second nationwide. In 1978, Dr. George Perkins started HDC out of his love for his wife, Helen, and others that suffered from mental health issues. Initially, he worked out of his home in Anchorage, KY. In the 1980s, Dr. Perkins expanded the business and moved HDC to historic Downtown Louisville.

In the early 1990s, Dr. Perkins decided to semi-retire and welcomed business partners/co-owners, Terry Mattingly and Barbara Kottke. They shared his original goal to leave the world a better place than how they found it. Under the direction of Terry and Barbara, HDC continued to flourish. In 2007, Dr. Perkins sold his remaining shares and fully retired from the EAP business. When Terry and Barbara decided to retire in 2008, they sold HDC to a well-trusted colleague, and current owner, Daniel Lee, LCSW.

Mr. Lee is a graduate of the University of Kentucky, College of Social Work, and a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over twenty-eight years of experience in the mental health field. Mr. Lee has worked diligently over the years to expand the small “mom & pop shop” that Dr. Perkins started all those years ago into the successful business we are today. By acquiring three additional employee assistance program companies, HDC is able to provide unparalleled EAP services nationwide. Mr. Lee remains steadfast in his belief that employees are an organization’s most valuable asset and therefore, recognizes that healthy employees drive the success of any business.

This year we celebrate 45 years by continuing our mission to enhance the quality of life for individuals and organizations through superior professional services, and timely interventions, and to provide client satisfaction by continuously improving the quality, scope, and cost-effectiveness of our services. HDC’s guiding principle has always been to provide high-quality, individualized services at a competitive price.
